Mediterranea
I went to go see the film Mediterranea on Friday the 16th of October. The film is directed by Jonas Carpignano. It was made in 2015. The genre of the film is drama and adventure. it is a drama because it heavily relies on realistic character development and story line development. It's adventure because the men travel to places they have never been before and discover new things. The themes of this film are friendship, racism, immigration and money. it has friendship because the story line follows the character Abas and his friend Ayiva. Both of the characters have strong bond between each other. It includes racism when they two men travel into the small town in Italy. The white people don’t like the Immigrants taking their jobs. They specifically don’t like the black skinned people taking their jobs. It includes immigration throughout the film because the two mean are moving from country to country and includes money because the older man Abas is always looking for stuff to sell and provide for his friend. The film is about two men who take a dangerous trip to Africa and then Africa to start a better life but then face hostility and violence in this shocking look at life and death struggle of refugees.

The cinematography through the film was handheld. The cinematography was directed by Wyatt Garfield. I believe this was to create the illusion to the audience that they are with the characters in the film. It gives the film a rougher edge  and a more realistic feel to the film. This put the audience in a first person view and in some scenes this would scare the audience such as the scene where the group of people are still in Africa and are just about to climb over the top of hill and the terrorists come over the hill and hinder the group from progressing to the border. The shakiness from the camera puts the audience in a recessive position.
The sound was directed by Nicolas Bekker. There is no non diegetic soundtrack in the whole film. It’s a bit like the film the weekend where they only use the noises around the characters to create a realistic interpretation. Just like the scene in weekend in Russells house where Glen is eating the chocolate bar. They emphasize the noise of the chocolate bar wrapper. This is to make the audience feel as though they are in the scene with them. They do the very same in Mediterranean. In most of the desserts scenes they use the non diegetic noise of wind, the sand hitting the clothing and their feet digging in to the ground. They all emphasize these noises to make it seem more realistic. What I mean by emphasizing the noises is that they make them very noticeable so they increase the volume of the sound effects.

The performance of the two men displayed that they were both very close to each other. The proximity of the two brothers were very throughout the film was very close. This then showed that they were not afraid of getting close this is because they have grown up together. There is a film where a similar relationship between to males happen. Which is The Selfish Giant. The two boys Arbor and Swifty weren't afraid to get close not in a sexual way but in a friend way. They would hit each other and wrestle. Another example is the film My brother the devil. the two boys Rashid and Mo have a close relationship and this is displayed through the older brother Rashid touching his brothers Mo's head. In summary the performance of the men are very similar to these two other films.

The mes en scene in the film tells and shows the audience that they are not in a poor estate wherever they go. Throughout the film you never see any huge high rise buildings. Therefore they never go in to a big city. The meaning of this is to show and tell how these two boys never make it "big" or can never make it "big". Another form of mes scene which shows how they are poor and struggling is there clothes and setting where they sleep. Their shelter is a small little shack made out of different pieces of metal and scrap. Therefore telling the audience that they are very low class and have little money. There clothing is rough and has been torn in multiple areas. meaning that the characters have no money to buy a new jumper so they keep the one they have at the moment. In conclusion this shows us that the area the characters are in is poor and they themselves are very low class and are very poor.
